Meet Primo
RMA Primo, affectionately known as “Primo,” is a registered 2019 chocolate Rocky Mountain Horse gelding standing approximately 14.3 HH. Foaled April 27, 2019, Primo is by TRIPLE S BIG SLICK and out of RHF TIME TO SHINE. Primo has been trained by us here at The Golden Horse and has approximately one year of training under saddle. He is the kind of horse we really enjoy having in our program: hardworking, willing, versatile, and always ready for whatever job is in front of him.
Primo has developed an incredibly well-rounded education both in and out of the arena. He has a beautiful, smooth gait and will also lope when asked. He collects nicely, moves off your leg, sidepasses, neck reins, opens gates, spins, and has an impressive sliding stop. His stop is easily one of our favorite things about riding him. He is soft in the bridle and can be ridden one- or two-handed, and we have even ridden him bridleless. Primo has also been taught to move over to a mounting block for his rider, making him enjoyable and convenient to get on whether you are at home or out on the trail.
What makes Primo particularly special to us is just how versatile he is. His training hasn’t been limited to going around an arena. He has moved cattle, roped, tracked the roping dummy, and worked the cutting flag. One day you can enjoy his smooth gait covering country on the trail, and the next you can put him to work around cattle. He genuinely seems to enjoy having a job and is always up for the task at hand. He handles pressure extremely well, wants to please, and gives his rider as much as they ask of him.
Outside of the arena is where Primo really shines. He is an exceptionally sure-footed horse in the mountains and can comfortably cover ground. He has traveled over rough country, crossed water, bridges and logs, ridden around deer, dogs and traffic, and has been ridden down the highway. He will confidently ride out alone or in a group and is equally content at the front, middle or back of the pack. He adjusts well to the speed of the horses around him rather than constantly pushing to get ahead or worrying about being left behind. He is not barn or buddy sour and remains level-headed when the environment around him changes.
Primo has also been hauled regularly and has seen a variety of new places and environments. One of the things we appreciate most about him is his ability to unload somewhere new and adapt. He can be hauled by himself, doesn’t need another horse there for confidence, and handles new surroundings very well. Between mountain country, arena riding, cattle work, trails, traffic, dogs and hauling, we have made an effort to give Primo a broad education and create a horse that is useful well beyond his home arena.
On the ground, Primo is friendly and straightforward to have around. He is easy to catch, stands tied, stands quietly to saddle, is easy to bridle, bathes, and is great for the farrier. He loads easily, backs out of the trailer, and hauls very well. He is happy living in either a stall or pasture setting and gets along well with other horses. Primo is also a hardy, easy keeper with great feet and good conformation. He is currently sound, requires no maintenance, has no history of previous injury, and has no notable blemishes or scars.
Under saddle, Primo does a nice job of adjusting to the person riding him. He doesn’t require someone to constantly be asking him for more; instead, he tends to give his rider the level of effort they request. Ask him to relax and comfortably gait down the trail, and he is happy to do exactly that. Pick him up and ask him to work, and there is a lot more horse there to use. Because of his training and responsiveness, we feel Primo is best suited to a confident novice rider or above who can appreciate and make use of what he knows.
Primo’s versatility is ultimately what makes him such a valuable horse. It is difficult to find one that combines the comfort and ground-covering ability of a Rocky Mountain Horse with this kind of diverse education. He can comfortably carry you down the trail, confidently navigate mountain country, work cattle, rope, work the flag, or simply be an enjoyable horse to have around. He has the work ethic to get a job done without losing the level-headed temperament that makes him enjoyable when there isn’t a job to do.
We believe Primo would be an excellent fit for an adult amateur, family, ranch or recreational home looking for one horse capable of filling several roles. If your ideal horse is one you can load in the trailer, take somewhere new, ride down the trail, cover country in the mountains, work cattle when needed, and simply enjoy having around the rest of the time, Primo checks a lot of boxes. He is a horse we have genuinely enjoyed training and riding, and we are excited to see him go to a home that will put his versatility, willingness and work ethic to good use.
